Industry POV

The quiet constraint on Canadian industrial growth

March 24, 2026

Ask an industrial operator what's actually holding back an expansion right now, and capital or labour usually isn't the first answer. Increasingly, it's the interconnection queue: the wait to get more capacity from the utility at the site you already run.

Storage doesn't make that queue shorter. What it does is change the negotiation:

  • Shave the site's peak so effective demand sits below the nameplate connection limit
  • Add load behind a connection that's already constrained, without waiting for an upgrade
  • Give the site a standalone resilience story that doesn't depend on the grid at all

We're not anti-grid. The grid is the backbone, and storage works with it, not around it. But for a site stuck in a queue, storage is often the fastest lever available that doesn't require the utility to move first.
